I had the privilege of studying with Dr. William Newbrough for 2 years, while pursuing a Master of Arts at Houghton College. I can't say enough how lucky I have been to meet such an outstanding pianist and wonderful teacher, and I consider him one of the most influential persons in my musical career.
Dr. Newbrough is a teacher of rare gifts. Besides his vast knowledge and mastery of piano repertoire, he takes care of every musical and technical aspect, with an approach that combines scrupulousness and joy at the same time. From a technical standpoint, Dr. Newbrough not only identifies issues with the rigor and the professionalism of the great teachers, but he offers countless different ways to fix them, and yet, he is able to transform the technical work into a gratifying musical experience. Being not just a pianist, but a well-rounded musician, his lessons are filled with creativity, imagination, and a sense of musicianship that I have rarely seen in any other teacher. Even in the simplest musical phrase, he can see what others can't, and, through his absolute love for music and contagious enthusiasm, he never tires of sharing such beauty with his students. Observing Dr. Newbrough teaching young pianists, I noticed an uncommon talent for finding the right approach to work with students of any level and age, and thanks to his grace, dedication, and sense of humor, he was able to infuse confidence and passion even in his least advanced students. For these rare gifts, and for his ethical qualities that match the level of his musical talents, my lessons with Dr. William Newbrough have been a priceless experience, and he has become one of my models both as a pianist and as a teacher.
